Wales boxer Nathan Thorley expected a tougher fight in his opening bout of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Wales boxer Nathan Thorley has admitted that he expected a tougher fight in his first bout of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Thorley received a bye into the last-16 stage of the competition, where he was pitted against Tongan Benjamin Taulalii.

It proved to be straight-forward for the Welshman, however, who forced a stoppage from the referee after taking charge of the contest in the early stages.

When asked by Sports Mole if he expected to come through in such comfortable fashion, Thorley said: "No, to be honest. Being a Tongan, I thought he was going to be a tough opponent, but he wasn't that type really. I had instructions and stuck to them.

"I weighed in on Thursday and was meant to box on the Friday and it was a little disheartening. I wanted to fight, but boxing Sunday makes up for not boxing Friday."

Thorley also had his say on the omission of headguards for this summer's Games.

"I am exactly the same as everybody else. It is more free and a lot lighter up top. It gives you the freedom to move and it is much better," he added.

Thorley will fight Yakita Aska in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
