Australia reach 229-9 in response to England's 215 in the first innings at Trent Bridge.

Australia have fought back late in the morning session to reach 229-9 at lunch on day two in their first innings of the Trent Bridge Test match against England.

In reply to England's 215, Australia ended the first day on 74-4, and the start of day two initially went well for them with a few boundaries before Steve Smith was caught behind by Matt Prior off James Anderson.

From that point on the Australian wickets tumbled, with Brad Haddin, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson all being dismissed with Australia floundering on 117-9.

However, a late partnership of more than 100 between Ashton Agar and Phil Hughes took the tourists to their total of 229-9 at lunch, 14 runs ahead of England's total.

Agar's fine innings of 69* became the highest debut innings for a number 11 in Test cricket as well as the highest ever score for Australia from that position.
