Former fast bowler Jason Gillespie has suggested that new Australia captain Steve Smith is the perfect candidate to take over from Michael Clarke.
Smith will become the skipper after the fifth Ashes Test this week, when Clarke retires stands down after the series defeat.
Gillespie wrote in The Guardian: "Smith is an impressive young man who must be allowed to do it his own way. That approach has been one of the standout aspects of Australian cricket in the past.
"We got a glimpse of Smith's leadership ability last year and in his four matches as captain – three Tests and one World Cup match – he has scored centuries.
"Runs will give him the confidence to captain as he sees fit and if he maintains his high standards he should make an excellent appointment."
Smith averages 54.66 in 30 Tests.
