Australia finish day one of the second Ashes Test against England on 273-5.

Australia have finished day one of the second Ashes Test against England in Adelaide on 273-5.

In what was a rain-affected day, the hosts had a productive morning session and headed into lunch for the loss of just one wicket, with David Warner (29) being the only man to fall to Stuart Broad.

However, in the afternoon the England bowlers took control and restricted their hosts to 174-4 by tea, with James Anderson, Graeme Swann and Monty Panesar sharing the wickets.

Shane Watson was the first man to fall after lunch for 51 runs and soon after Chris Rogers was dismissed by Swann for 72.

Steve Smith was got rid of by Panesar for just six runs, but George Bailey and Michael Clarke steadied Australia's innings in the evening session.

The Aussies lost one more wicket before the close of play as Swann caught Bailey at square-leg off the bowling of Broad; the 31-year-old made 53 before his dismissal.

Captain Clarke and Brad Haddin will resume day two on 48 and seven respectively.
