Steve Smith and Brad Haddin guide Australia to 201-5 at tea on day one of the fifth Ashes test in Sydney.

Australia have reached 201-5 at tea on day one of the fifth Ashes Test match against England in Sydney.

The tourists had them at 97-5 after lunch at the SCG, but Steve Smith (48) and Brad Haddin (59) have put on 104 from 147 balls to steady the ship before the final session.

David Warner (16) was the first man to go in the morning courtesy of a fine delivery from Stuart Broad, which uprooted the opener's off stump.

Ben Stokes then made a mess of Chris Rogers's (11) stumps, before taking the wicket of Michael Clarke (10) for the third time this series.

The skipper was caught at second slip by Ian Bell while trying to swipe a delivery to the off side, leaving his team 78-3.

Shane Watson (43) was dismissed seven runs shy of his half-century as James Anderson trapped him lbw just before lunch.

George Bailey (1) was the only wicket to fall in the second session, as he was caught by Alastair Cook off the bowling of Broad.

However, with the Three Lions in the ascendancy, Smith and Haddin have proved themselves effective partners to restore Aussie hopes of posting a competitive first-innings total.
