An unbeaten 77-run partnership between Steven Smith and Brad Haddin has helped Australia move to 220-5 at tea on the first day of the third Ashes Test match in Perth.
England had edged the morning session after picking up three Australian wickets, but the home side have seized the advantage going into the final two hours of the day.
After resuming on 106-3, Australia scored 23 more runs before David Warner departed for 60 after cutting a Graeme Swann delivery to point, and George Bailey soon followed after holing out to Kevin Pietersen off the bowling of Stuart Broad.
Australia were reeling, but Smith went on the offensive to bring up his half-century from 76 balls, while Haddin was showing plenty of intent at the other end.
Smith will return after tea on 58 with Haddin on 35, as both sides target a positive end to an entertaining first day in Perth.
