George Bailey is not expecting to be handed the one-day international captaincy of Australia following Michael Clarke's retirement.

George Bailey has revealed that he does not anticipate being appointed as the new one-day international skipper of Australia.

The 32-year-old was officially vice-captain to Michael Clarke, who recently announced his retirement from the 50-over format of the game after Australia's World Cup triumph.

However, Bailey does not expect to be considered to replace Clarke, largely because he was dropped from the team for most of the World Cup.

"If I wasn't in the team for this last six weeks then I can't imagine I would [be the captain]. I would love to remain a part of [the team]," he told the Hobart Mercury.

"I certainly feel like I've got a number of good years of cricket left in me, and hopefully a number of them are in Australian colours."

Twenty-five-year-old Steve Smith is expected to be handed the role, having deputised for Clarke in the Test format over the winter.
