Tim Nielsen: 'Everyone in shock over Hughes death'

Phil Hughes's death has left everyone in shock, according to South Australia high performance manager Tim Nielsen.

South Australia performance manager Tim Nielsen has revealed that everyone is in a "lot of shock" after the death of batsman Phil Hughes.

The 25-year-old died two days after being struck on the neck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match in Sydney, an incident which prompted a "frantic" response, according to Nielsen.

He told BBC Radio Five Live: "You're used to guys being hurt - not used to it, but perhaps prepared for small things like head wounds.

"It became obvious pretty quickly that it wasn't just a normal cricketing injury and the frantic nature of the players and the staff that were involved in the game at the time made it very clear to everyone at the ground that there was some real concern.

"It happened against his home state, where he was born and grew up. He had some friends and his mum and his sister at the game - they'd come down from the country to watch - so I think everyone was in a lot of shock."

Nielsen was head coach of Australia when Hughes was given his Test debut in 2009.
