Australia batsman Steve Smith believes that the pitch in Delhi was dangerous to bat on for him and his teammates.

Australia batsman Steve Smith has admitted that the pitch in Delhi caused him and his teammates problems and feels it was quite dangerous to play on.

The Aussies struggled to 231/8 at the close of day one of the fourth Test with Peter Siddle top scoring on 47 not out, while Smith and Phil Hughes posted 46 and 45 respectively.

Hughes was struck by the ball in the face, shortly before falling to Ishant Sharma.

Smith told Fox Sports: "It's not too often you see the wicket turning like that the first day of a Test match. It is going to be pretty tough, there's not too many balls that go through the top like the one that hit Hughesy.

"It is going to be good for us to bowl [on that pitch]. It's not too often on the first day of a Test match you see a ball going through the top like that and hitting a bloke in the grille [of the helmet]."

Ravichandran Ashwin starred with the ball for India taking 4-40 in his spell of 30 overs.
