Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland claims that Sean Abbott is "holding up well" following the death of Phil Hughes.

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland has claimed that Sean Abbott is "holding up well" following the death of Phil Hughes on Thursday.

Hughes passed away in a Sydney hospital due to brain injuries he sustained when he was struck by an Abbott bouncer in a Sheffield Shield match on Tuesday.

There have been concerns that the accident could have a big impact on Abbott's ability to return to the sport, but Sutherland insists that the New South Wales bowler will continue to be offered support by Cricket Australia.

"I chatted to him on Thursday night and I was incredibly impressed by the way he was holding himself, and his maturity," Sutherland told reporters.

"This isn't a moment in time thing, it's a grieving process that affects people in different ways.

"We, and the relevant experts, will provide Sean with all of the support that he needs."

It has been reported that a number of players who were involved in the game at the Sydney Cricket Ground have been receiving counselling this week.
