Australia opener David Warner has bowed out of his team's one-day series with England after breaking his thumb.

Warner retired in the second one-day international after being struck by a short ball from Steven Finn.

Cricket Australia has since confirmed that the player's thumb was fractured and has opted to send him home.

"David Warner has a fracture in his left thumb, expected to be out for four-to-six weeks. Replacement to be named in due course," said the governing body in a statement on Twitter.

Warner will fly back to Australia on Monday.
