Australia beat New Zealand by 208 runs, taking seven wickets on the final day of the first Test in Brisbane.

Australia managed to wrap up the first Test in Brisbane by taking seven wickets on day five to claim a 208-run win over New Zealand in the opening contest in Brisbane.

The Black Caps had forced the Test into a final day after battling to 142-3 on day four, but they still had a mountain to climb.

Needing 362 runs on day five to claim victory, Ross Taylor and Brendon McCullum added another 23 runs between them before the former was dismissed after hitting 26 runs off 47 deliveries.

The bounce of the pitch played into Australia's hands as Mitchell Johnson managed to dismiss James Neesham for just three while Nathan Lyon grabbed his third wicket of the innings by taking out BJ Watling for 14.

New Zealand skipper McCullum was the next to fall, but it was a controversial dismissal as he was given out when Steven Smith caught the ball at slip after Mitchell Marsh's delivery hit the batsman's pad.

McCullum left the field after scoring 80 runs off as many balls, and the wickets began to tumble as Marsh struck again to take Doug Bracewell out for a duck.

Tim Southee could only add five runs to the tally before he was caught out, while Mark Craig (26 not out) and Trent Boult claimed a 46-run partnership before the latter was dismissed for 15 off Mitchell Starc, who took six wickets overall in the Test.

The second Test will begin on Friday in Perth.
