Australia open up a 479-run lead over South Africa on the third day of the first Test in Centurion.

A century from David Warner has helped Australia to extend their lead against South Africa on day three of the first Test in Centurion.

Despite a knock of 91 from AB de Villiers, South Africa were bowled out for 206 before lunch as the tourists established a first-innings lead of 257. Mitchell Johnson was the pick of the Australian bowlers, claiming seven wickets for 68 runs.

Dale Steyn gave the Proteas hope when he claimed the early wicket of Chris Rogers for one, but Warner and debutant Alex Doolan steadied matters.

Warner scored runs at a quick pace and notched up his sixth Test century when he drove a Morne Morkel delivery for four. He and Doolan put on a partnership of 200 for the second wicket before Warner was caught by Graeme Smith off the bowling of Alvaro Peterson for 115.

Doolan's debut innings came to an end on 89 when he he edged a JP Duminy delivery behind to De Villiers. However, South Africa could not claim another wicket as Shaun Marsh (44*) and Michael Clarke (17*) steered the Baggy Greens to 288-3 at the close of play.

Australia will resume on day four with a lead of 479 runs.
