Australia race to a 284-run lead in the boxing day Test against Sri Lanka after dominating day two in Melbourne.

Australia batsman Michael Clarke's memorable 2012 continued as he broke two records to help his side dominate Sri Lanka in day two of their Christmas Test.

The hosts finished the day on 440-8 which gave them a lead of 284 runs in Melbourne.

Australia, who were 238 for three at lunch, walked off for tea on 330 for six after three wickets fell for just four runs in mid-afternoon.

Not long after reaching his 22nd Test century, Clarke (106) was caught at slip by Mahela Jayawardene off the the bowling of Shaminda Eranga.

Shane Watson's 198-ball and 83-run innings came to an end when his awkward hook shot found the hands of Thilan Samaraweera, who held on to give Dhammika Prasad his second wicket of the Test.

Prasad then claimed his third wicket, as Matthew Wade (1) was caught in the deep by Eranga.

Michael Hussey (34) and Mitchell Johnson had calmed things down for the hosts, to add a 61-run stand before the former was the victim of an amazing one-handed catch from Rangana Herath, and then Peter Siddle was then dismissed for 13 by Eranga.

Clarke's first ton at the MCG broke Ricky Ponting's record for most Test runs by an Australian in a calendar year.
