Hashim Amla's unbeaten knock of 97 is not enough to stop South Africa losing the match and the Twenty20 series against Australia.

A six-wicket victory in Cape Town this evening has wrapped up a 2-1 Twenty20 series triumph for Australia against South Africa.

With the series delicately poised, the hosting Proteas won the toss and elected to bat first.

Without talisman AB de Villiers, who was rested ahead of the upcoming ICC World Twenty20, it was Hashim Amla that took on the role as quick run-scorer.

The 32-year-old contributed an unbeaten 97 from just 62 deliveries, helping his side to a score of 178-4 from their 20 overs.

In reply, none of the tourists' batsmen went beyond 50, yet it was a collective effort that got them over the finishing line.

Openers Usman Khawaja (33) and Shane Watson (42) provided the platform, while Steve Smith and David Warner added 44 and 33 respectively to the cause.

It was eventually left to the combination of Glenn Maxwell (19*) and Mitchell Marsh (4*) to guide the Aussies to 181 with four balls remaining.

During the post-match interviews, Amla was handed the Man of the Match award, with Australia's Warner being named the Player of the Series.

Both teams will now head for India to prepare for their respective World Cup campaigns.
