Australia remain favourites to claim victory against Pakistan on day three of the first Test in Brisbane, despite some stern batting resistance from the tourists.

Australia remain in pole position to claim victory against Pakistan on day three of the first Test in Brisbane.

Fifties from Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja helped the hosts declare on 202-5, setting the tourists a victory target of 490.

Having lost 7-24 in the same period of their first innings, the Australian crowd could have been forgiven for expecting yet another glut of wickets.

However, the Pakistan batsmen put up stern resistance and saw off the new pink ball on Saturday night to reach stumps at 70-2.

With two days to play, the tourists sit 419 runs behind with eight wickets in hand, having lost Sami Aslam and Babar Azam at the hands of Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.
