India strike late to end an emotional opening day in Adelaide for Australia on 354-6 in the first Test following David Warner's 10th Test ton.

India struck late in the evening session after a commanding start from Australia, who have reached stumps on 354-6 on an emotional opening day of the first Test in Adelaide.

The Aussies took to the field for the first time since the death of 25-year-old batsman Phil Hughes, who was honoured in a video tribute prior to the match.

David Warner starred for the Aussies today after storming to his 10th Test century off 106 balls, but his time at the crease eventually came to an end in the evening session when Karn Sharma struck to dismiss the batsman for 145.

Earlier in the day, captain Michael Clarke reached a half-century, but he was forced to retire with back pain after hitting 60 off 84 deliveries.

His replacement Steven Smith led the attack following the wicket of Warner and he too hit 50, while Mitchell Marsh also looked composed with the bat.

India's bowlers were frustrated on the field, with only Varun Aaron, Ishant Sharma and Karn taking one wicket apiece before the final hour of play.

However, they were given a boost when Aaron took his second wicket when Marsh was caught out by Virat Kohli nine runs short of a half century.

India gained some momentum in the closing overs when Mohammed Shami bowled Nathan Lyon out for just three off 14 balls and then dismissed Brad Haddin for a duck.

Smith (72 not out) will return to the crease for day two.
