Pakistan are facing a heavy defeat in the first Test match with Pakistan after they were reduced to 97-8 on day two in Brisbane.

Australia have ended day two of the first Test match with Pakistan with a lead of 332 runs after their bowlers dismantled the tourists' batting lineup in Brisbane.

The day began with Australia on 288-3 and although Steven Smith soon fell after reaching 130, Peter Handscomb registered a knock of 105 to take his team towards the 400 mark.

Nathan Lyon (29) and Jackson Bird (19*) put on 49 for the final wicket to take Australia to 429, and it was then the turn of the bowlers to take the game away from Pakistan.

Mitchell Starc removed Azhar Ali for just five before Josh Hazlewood chipped in with two wickets in two balls to leave Pakistan on 43-3.

Opener Sami Aslam remained at the crease but when he went for 22, Pakistan were left on 56-6 and already contemplating the follow-on, and their first innings appeared to be coming to an end when they were further reduced to 67-8 after just 34.1 overs.

They saw out the remaining 8.5 overs with Sarfraz Ahmed remaining at the crease on 31 not out but they will return on Saturday on 97-8, requiring another 133 runs to make Australia bat next.
