The hosts lost their first wicket in the sixth over when Kraigg Brathwaite was caught by Brad Haddin off the bowling of Josh Hazlewood for 10.
Darren Bravo was the next to go as Michael Clarke and Nathan Lyon combined to dismiss him for 19, while opener Shai Hope followed soon after for 36 as Mitchell Johnson claimed his first victim of the match.
Shane Dowrich (15*) and Marlon Samuels (3*) will return to the crease when play continues.
