Thirty-two years ago today, Bob Willis claimed eight Australian wickets as England pulled off an unlikely Ashes victory.

Yesterday Sports Mole described how Sir Ian Botham's unbeaten knock of 145 runs handed England a slender chance of claiming victory from the third Test of the 1981 Ashes at Headingley.

Beefy returned to the crease alongside Bob Willis 32 years ago today, but the pair were only able to add five more runs to the home side's total, meaning that England were bowled out for 356.

The Aussies, who made 401 during their first innings, now had what looked to be a relatively straightforward total of 129 to reach for victory and a 2-0 series lead.

It appeared that they were cruising towards the win on 55-1, but bowler Willis opted to change ends and deliver into the wind.

The alteration in tactics proved to be a match-winning one for England as Willis ripped through the tourists' batting order and ended with figures of 8-43. As a result, Australia were bowled out for just 111 - 18 runs short of their target.

It prompted a swing in momentum as far as the series was concerned. Instead of being 2-0 down, England were now level at 1-1 and went on to regain the urn courtesy of a 3-1 triumph.
