The ECB says that it will investigate the circumstances behind the police being called to end a drinking session between England and Australia players.

The ECB has acknowledged that it plans to investigate the circumstances behind the police being called out to end a drinking session between a number of England and Australia players.

The fifth and final Test match ended on Sunday, Australia taking England's final 10 wickets during the second innings for just 56 runs.

Players and staff from both teams traditionally share drinks at the end of every series, and on this occasion, it occurred at the England team's hotel in Hobart.

However, following a report of "intoxicated people", the Tasmania police were called, resulting in a number of players - said to be England's Joe Root and James Anderson, and Australia's Nathan Lyon, Alex Carey and Travis Head - being asked to return to their rooms.

In a statement, the ECB said: "The England party have apologised for any inconvenience. The hotel management received a noise complaint by a hotel guest and, as is commonplace in Australia, the local police attended the scene.

"When asked to leave by hotel management and the Tasmanian police, the players and management in question returned to their respective hotel rooms. The ECB will investigate further. Until such times, we will make no further comment."

England lost the series by a 4-0 scoreline, their only marginal success coming through dramatically avoiding defeat in the fourth Test. body check tags ::
