Nasser Hussain believes that James Anderson is "irreplaceable" in the England bowling attack after being ruled out of the fourth Ashes Test due to a side strain.

Nasser Hussain has declared that James Anderson is "irreplaceable" in the England bowling attack.

The 33-year-old has been ruled out of the fourth Ashes Test at Trent Bridge after sustaining a side strain on day two of the Three Lions' eight-wicket win over Australia at Edgbaston.

Hussain believes that Alastair Cook's men cannot replace Anderson in the lineup, but feels that Mark Wood should come into the team because of his experience in the series.

He told the Daily Mail: "This win has also come at a big cost for England. They have lost Jimmy Anderson, their king of swing, who is the leader of their attack and someone who takes his wickets at 19 apiece at Trent Bridge.

"When Jimmy Anderson has performed in this series, at Cardiff and here at Edgbaston, England have won the Test match. He's vital to England's cause and irreplaceable. It will be a difficult one for England's selectors – who I must say did a brilliant job in this Test with the changes they made – because there is no like-for-like replacement for Jimmy out there.

"Personally I'd like someone with experience of Ashes cricket. Mark Wood hasn't let anyone down and if he's fully fit and available I'd go with him and he's got an excellent record there for Durham. This series is only going to get more intense and England need someone who can cope with that."

England can win The Ashes with a victory at Trent Bridge in the fourth Test, which begins next week.
