Dawid Malan has claimed that England are now "back in the game" after he and Joe Root put on an unbeaten 159-run partnership against Australia on day three of the first Test.

England begun their second innings trailing the hosts by 278 runs, but Malan (80*) and Root (86*) starred in Brisbane on day three to take their side to 220-2.

The tourists still have several obstacles to overcome, most notably the new ball which is due after 10 overs on day four, but Malan suggests that England will take confidence from their performance on day three.

Speaking after the close of play, Malan said: "We're back in the game and hopefully we can get at least another 100-run partnership between me and Joe and then whoever comes in next.

"It's become a good wicket and hopefully we can get a good day tomorrow and cash in."

Australia still hold a 58-run lead, helped by Travis Head's 152 off 148 balls earlier in the contest. body check tags ::
