Shane Watson inspires Australia to a dominant opening day of the final Ashes Test against England at The Oval.

Australia have enjoyed a dominant opening day of the final Ashes Test against England at The Oval.

A knock of 176 from Shane Watson helped the tourists reach a score of 307-4 at the close of play after they had won the toss.

Australia lost David Warner (6) to James Anderson early in the morning session, but Watson and Chris Rogers rallied to put their side on 112-1 at lunch as they tore into debutants Simon Kerrigan and Chris Woakes.

England had some success after the break as Rogers (23) fell to Graeme Swann before Michael Clarke (7) was sent packing by Anderson.

The dismissal was a significant one for Anderson, who overtook Bob Willis to become England's second-leading wicket-taker of all time in Tests with 325.

However, the English celebrations did not last long as a rejuvenated Watson reached his first century in 25 Tests to put the Aussies on 183-3 at tea.

Steven Smith complemented Watson well out in the middle, and he was soon passing his half century with little trouble.

Watson survived an lbw appeal late on, but he was not so lucky with a handful of overs left in the day when he was caught impressively by Kevin Pietersen off the bowling of Stuart Broad.

Smith went on to finish the day on 66 not out, while Peter Siddle (18) will join him at the crease on Thursday.
