England lead by 15 runs after a dramatic second day of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge that featured a record haul of 98 runs from Australia's Ashton Agar.

England have edged ahead of Australia by 15 runs after an action-packed second day of the first Ashes Test at Trent Bridge.

Australia finished their first innings in style to build a 65-run advantage just after lunch, thanks to a record-breaking 10th-wicket partnership between Ashton Agar and Phil Hughes.

Agar fell just short of a century on his Test debut, as his fine innings was finally brought to a halt on 98 courtesy of a deep catch by Graeme Swann.

The tourists finished on 280 all out, with Hughes and Agar setting an all-time Test record for a final-wicket partnership at 151.

England's attempt to respond stuttered early on, with the wickets of Joe Root and Jonathan Trott taken in successive balls by Mitchell Starc just before tea.

Alastair Cook and Kevin Pietersen steadied the ship after tea, reaching 80-2 to give England a slender lead at the end of day two.
