Australia finish day one of the first Ashes Test against England in Brisbane on 273-8.

Australia have finished the first day of the first Ashes Test against England on 273-8 following a recovery in the evening session.

The hosts were 153-6 at tea at The Gabba in Brisbane but half-centuries from Brad Haddin and Mitchell Johnson helped them mount a late comeback.

Result: England hold advantage after day one

Earlier in the day Stuart Broad had ripped apart the Australian top order despite being booed by the home fans, taking the wickets of Shane Watson, captain Michael Clarke, David Warner and Chris Rogers.

However, Johnson and Haddin put on a good resistance after tea before the former was bowled out by Broad, his fifth wicket of the winnings, for 64 runs.

James Anderson picked up his second wicket of the match just before lunch when Peter Siddle edged his delivery to Alastair Cook at first slip and was dismissed for just seven.

At the close of play on day one, Haddin was unbeaten on 78 runs, while Ryan Harris was four not out. Broad finished with figures of 5-65 and Anderson with 2-61.
