England have made a positive start to their must-win third Test meeting with Australia by closing day one on 305-4 at the WACA.
The tourists, trailing 2-0 after a disappointing opening to their Ashes campaign, saw their hopes revived thanks to a maiden Test century from Dawid Malan in Perth.
At a ground England have failed to win at since 1978, Malan gathered an unbeaten 110 after surviving a scare when dropped on 92 by Cameron Bancroft.
Jonny Bairstow also registered 75 not out, sharing a partnership of 174 with Middlesex left-hander Malan, while Mark Stoneman made 56 on the pacy surface before being sent packing.
There was less joy for Alastair Cook, who was out for just seven runs, and James Vince and Joe Root could only hit for 25 and 20 runs respectively.
