Joe Root: 'Eoin Morgan will turn it on at World Cup'

Joe Root is convinced that run-shy England captain Eoin Morgan will rediscover his form under the pressure of the World Cup following a poor run of scores.

Joe Root has backed run-shy England captain Eoin Morgan to step up when it counts and rediscover his form at the World Cup.

Morgan has made just two runs in his last four innings and was dismissed for a second-ball duck as England lost their final warm-up match against Pakistan on Wednesday.

With Alastair Cook having been axed as one-day international skipper in December due to a lack of runs, concerns are now being raised over Morgan's performances, but Root has highlighted the Irishman's record and is convinced that he will turn it on again under the pressure of a tournament.

"Morgs is one of the guys that under the pump, when the pressure is on, is someone you turn to," he told reporters. "He's done it so many times for us and I'm sure throughout this competition he's going to score a lot of runs.

"Everyone in the dressing room is absolutely convinced that's going to be the case as he's obviously a fine player and fine leader.

"There's no bigger stage than Saturday. I'm sure he is, as much as anyone in the squad, really looking forward to getting out there and putting on a show."

Root made 85 off 89 balls to help England post 250 against Pakistan, who knocked it off with four wickets and nearly two overs to spare.
