Alastair Cook (168*) and Matt Prior (84*) battle against India on day four of the first Test to give England a faint hope of an unlikely draw in Ahmedabad.

Alastair Cook and Matt Prior have battled England to the possibility of an unlikely draw in the first Test against India in Ahmedabad.

The tourists finished day four on 340-5, 10 runs ahead of India, who had been looking to tie up an innings victory today.

However, Cook moved on to 168* and had plenty of support from Prior (84*) after wickets had fallen in the morning and afternoon.

Nick Compton went for 37 lbw to Zaheer Khan before Jonathan Trott (17) and Kevin Pietersen (2) went before lunch.

Cook reached his century just before the end of the first session but soon he was watching his playing partners fall down the other end.

Umesh Yadav trapped Ian Bell lbw on 22 before the right-armer dismissed new batsman Samit Patel with the very next ball.

Prior came in and steadied the ship with Cook as the tourists reached 264-5 at tea before batting out the evening session, with Cook passing 150 and Prior edging in on his century.
