Opener Alistair Cook recorded his 19th Test century from 213 balls as the hosts opened up an advantage over India.
The tourists did claim two wickets, Amit Mishra bowling captain Andrew Strauss 13 short of his century while Paveen Kumar clean bowled Ian Bell for 34.
England will resume with Cook at the crease on 129, alongside Kevin Pietersen who is unbeaten on 36.
