Live text coverage of day four of the third Test between India and England in Kolkata.

England started day four of the third Test against India in a commanding position following another impressive display with the bat on Friday.

However, India enjoyed great success in the morning session as the England innings was quickly wrapped up for 523, with the tourists adding only 14 runs to their overnight score.

Gautam Gambhir (40) and Virender Sehwag (49) guided the hosts to lunch without the loss of a wicket but a collapse during the afternoon in Kolkata meant India started the final session on 145-6.

Ravichandran Ashwin (83*) frustrated the England attack in the evening session with a defiant knock as India closed on 239-9 to ensure the match heads into a fifth day.

Read how Saturday's events unfolded inside Eden Gardens below.

Good morning everyone. So, England begin this crucial day of Test cricket 193 runs ahead of India. Can the tourists set up victory in Kolkata today? Stick around to find out.
India need to show their quality today if they are to salvage anything from this match. Early wickets are needed but with England's lead approaching 200, the damage may have already been done.
The tourists will begin play with Matt Prior (40*) and Graeme Swann (21*) at the crease and both players will want to add runs at a good rate this morning to set up a possible declaration.
England may well bat until lunch before declaring so expect some shots to be played from the remaining batsmen as they look to increase that lead.
There were signs that the pitch was beginning to turn more as yesterday progressed but when England do bowl, they must be patient.
For now, England still have a job to do with the bat. Swann and Prior have made their way out to the middle while India have their final huddle before beginning a vital day's play in this third Test.
Ojha will bowl the first over of the day.
Prior is off strike immediately with a push to cover for a single.
Wicket! Swann (21) c Sehwag b Ojha
The single brings Swann on strike but he edges his first ball to Sehwag at slip. That ball from Ojha turned considerably which may actually provide Swann with some encouragement. Great start for India, Steven Finn in next.
Finn is happy to defend his first four deliveries and that means Prior keeps the strike for the next over. Ojha now has four wickets in the innings.
Wicket! Prior (42) c Dhoni b Zaheer
What a start for India! Zaheer takes the ball from the other end and dismisses Prior, who could only edge the ball to Dhoni as he attempted to guide the ball to third man. This is exactly what India needed this morning.
Zaheer starts with a short ball to Anderson but England's number nine does enough to pick up a single on the leg-side. A punch through past mid-on from Finn travels quickly to the boundary rope for four runs. This pair must play positively.
Ojha continues but Anderson manages to prod the ball past short leg to pick up a single and take England's lead to 200. Finn just seems happy to block at the moment but it's not really the time to be in defensive mode.
Zaheer is trying get Anderson driving and the tail-end batsman is happy to oblige, missing his first drive completely before striking a beautiful shot through extra cover for four. Anderson then whips the ball through mid-wicket to easily collect three more runs.
Wicket! Anderson (9) c Sehwag b Ashwin
Ashwin comes into the attack to replace Ojha and he has a wicket from his second ball. The off-spinner gets one to turn and bounce outside off stump, forcing Anderson to edge the ball straight to Sehwag at slip. This pitch is turning, which is probably better for England than it is for India at this stage. Mr Panesar is in next.
Wicket! Panesar (0) lbw b Ashwin
Well, Mr Panesar didn't last very long. Ashwin appeals for lbw from the first ball to England's number 11 and the umpire quickly raises his finger. The decision is very harsh, with replays showing that Panesar got a big inside edge on the ball.
Good work from India to wrap up this innings quickly this morning but with the way this pitch is spinning, they have a big task on their hands. England lead by 207 and India's second innings is just a few minutes away.
Panesar looked furious with that decision as he left the field but his real job is about to begin and after seeing a few of those deliveries this morning, he will be confident.
The England team are back out on the field and the Indian duo of Sehwag and Gambhir walk out onto the pitch cheered on by the small crowd in Kolkata. This period of play before lunch will be crucial for both sides.
Predictably, it is Anderson who will open the bowling for England.
Anderson does find some movement in the air from the first ball but Gambhir is good off his pads and picks up four runs with a nudge through mid-wicket. England's opening bowler responds well, beating the outside edge with one that just holds its line. Gambhir flicks the ball through mid-wicket once again to easily collect two more runs and it's six from the first over.
Finn will share the new ball with Anderson.
Good start from Finn and he almost gets Sehwag to drag the ball onto his own stumps with a mistimed cut shot. Sehwag opens the face later in the over to superbly guide the ball through third man for four runs, much to Finn's frustration. The Middlesex seamer responds brilliantly with one that bounces over the shoulder of India's opener. Good contest between those two.
Anderson continues and is agonisingly close to finding the outside edge when Gambhir plays a lazy drive wide of of his off-stump. It's another good over from Anderson, a maiden.
Finn does have the pace to use the short ball on this pitch but his first ball is too wide to trouble Sehwag. Much better from Finn as he forces Sehwag to play and miss outside off-stump. A thick edge onto the off-side brings India a single and that's the only blemish to the over.
Sehwag turns as short ball onto the leg-side to get off strike at the beginning of Anderson's new over. Gambhir is looking scratchy early in his innings and once again swings wildly outside off-stump but doesn't edge the ball towards the slips.
I have a feeling that Panesar could be getting into some trouble with the match referee pretty soon. England's cult hero was furious after being given out lbw and appeared to vent his anger towards Kumar Dharmasena. To be fair, it was an awful decision from the 2012 ICC umpire of the year.
Finn continues to probe away outside off-stump but Sehwag finds a single when a poorly executed cut shot makes its way to Pietersen at third man. Gambhir is happy to leave the ball as Finn find some extra bounce to the left-hander.
Anderson finds a genuine edge but Sehwag somehow manages to survive with the ball evading Swann and Cook in the slips before travelling to the third man boundary. That really should have been taken but neither fielder really committed to their respective efforts. Sehwag piles on the misery for Anderson by punching the ball through mid-wicket for four runs one ball later. Missed chance for England, eight runs from the over.
Spin is into the attack for England as Monty Panesar is thrown the ball for the first time in the innings.
Gambhir rocks back to cut Panesar to deep point for a single, bringing Sehwag on strike. India's entertaining opener is restrained, for now, picking up a run with a thick inside edge before Gambhir beautifully drives the ball through extra cover for four.
Anderson continues and Sehwag earns two runs from the first ball with a nudge through mid-wicket. A play and a miss outside off-stump is followed by a good short ball from Anderson but Sehwag manages to glove the ball to safety.
Sehwag uses his feet well to push Panesar down the ground for a single from the second ball of a new over. The Sussex spinner is finding a nice line outside off-stump to Gambhir but the left-hander defends well before flicking the ball to mid-on to keep the strike. It's time for a drinks break.
Good start in this second innings from India, with that missed chance in the slips the only moment of drama so far. England will want to make a breakthrough before lunch to expose India's middle order.
Swann is into the attack, replacing Anderson. England's off-spinner immediately finds the right length to Gambhir but he is met by some stubborn defence. Maiden over.
Panesar continues but a prod onto the off-side from Sehwag allows India to sneak a single. Sehwag appears to be struggling with a possible knee injury, keep an eye on that. Gambhir lunges forward and is almost caught by Bell at short-leg but he can't react quickly enough to hold onto the ball. Four runs in the over.
Gambhir pushes the ball to point but rejects Sehwag's call for a single and his partner still appears to be concerned by a problem in his knee. A flick to mid-wicket brings two runs before a fumble in the field allows Gambhir to sneak a single. Sehwag picks the gap on the off-side to collect a single of his own, four from the over.
Panesar continues but strays onto the pads, allowing Sehwag to whip the ball to square-leg for a single. Gambhir is forced onto the back foot by a flat delivery but manages to work the ball to third man for two runs.
A surprise bowling change from Cook as he brings Patel into the attack but the Notts all-rounder starts with a full toss, giving Sehwag the opportunity to smash the ball straight down the ground for four. A push to long-on then brings a single before Gambhir rotates the strike again with a flick to square-leg. Runs are easy to come by in the over and India collect nine from the six balls.
Presumably, Patel's introduction was so that Swann could swap ends with Panesar. Sehwag begins Swann's over by slog-sweeping the ball for four. An attempted big shot is then missed by Sehwag but the ball evades Prior and four byes are added to England's total. Sehwag holds his knee again following a forward defence but he must be careful not to give his wicket away. Eight from the over.
Patel's unsuccessful stint only lasts one over as Panesar returns to the attack. Sehwag seems to be uncomfortable playing on the front foot at the moment and he is happy to get off strike with a cut to deep cover. Gambhir adds a single with a push onto the off-side, two from the over. India trail by 144 runs.
Good work from this pair as they trade singles at the start of a new Swann over. Gambhir is completely bemused when Swann gets one to turn and bounce past the outside edge, suggesting that the heavy roll before the innings may be wearing off.
Panesar continues but Sehwag is off strike from the first ball. Gambhir almost drags the ball onto his stumps with a mistimed cut shot and he resorts to blocking out the remainder of the over.
Sehwag pushes the ball to cover for a single before a poor piece of fielding from Patel at mid-wicket gifts a run to Gambhir. Swann gets one to hold its line, beating the outside edge of Sehwag. A shorter ball allows the same batsman to free his arms and cut the ball through the off-side for four more runs before a slog-sweep brings another boundary.
It's Gambhir's turn to play the big shot as he dances down the pitch to launch Panesar over long-on for a big six. England are being bullied by their opponents now but it's good cricket from India. A heave across the line from Gambhir looks ugly and Compton is almost able to take the ball at short mid-wicket but the left-hander survives. Brilliant from Gambhir as he ends the over by lofting the ball straight over Panesar's head for four more runs to bring this session to a close.
Lunch: India will be very, very happy with their work this morning. Four quick wickets this morning halted England's progress and their openers have started to chip away at the deficit. Sehwag is 49* at lunch while Gambhir is currently 33*. Great session from India but they remain 121 runs behind.
Join me again in around 30 minutes when England will attempt to make inroads into this Indian batting lineup.
Welcome back everyone. Big session coming up in the match, with India having the better of the day so far. If the opening pair can stay together for a while longer, the hosts will be confident about securing a draw.
India's fightback has made this a very exciting day of Test cricket. However, if England can take a couple of wickets early in this session, their prospects will grow on a turning pitch.
Sehwag and Gambhir are back out on the field of play while Cook is leading his players out for what will be a massive session in the context of this series.
Wicket! Sehwag (49) b Swann
What a moment! Swann spins the ball through Sehwag's defence and onto the top of off-stump. India's opener goes from the first ball of the session and that is a big wicket for the tourists.
Pujara is the new batsman and he is fortunate from his second ball when an inside edge just evades Bell at short-leg. Great start from Swann and India are back under pressure.
Finn will begin a new spell and is immediately taken for a single by Gambhir with a push to third man. In typical Finn fashion, the Middlesex knocks over the bails with his knee during his action and a dead ball is called. Pujara gets off the mark with a well timed on drive for four runs before a sharp bouncer is well taken by Prior down the leg-side. Five from the over.
Two strokes of luck for Gambhir when an inside edge drops just short of Bell at short leg before a similar shot loops just over the head of the same fielder, resulting in a single. Strange shot from Pujara as he plays across the line, just missing the man at short-leg. A fuller delivery is then driven through extra cover for four runs. Very intriguing phase of play since lunch.
Finn continues and he clearly feels that the short ball is a good tactic at Gambhir. India's opener is untroubled during the over and easily defends a maiden.
Swann is bowling a very good line outside off-stump, forcing the number three to search for the ball with his hands. India have gone back into their shell now and it's another maiden.
Finn needs to be careful not to bowl the short ball too often and when he does go fuller he causes Gambhir problems outside off-stump. A hopeful lbw appeal is quickly rejected with the ball going down leg side and the Indian duo sneak a leg bye.
Swann is trying to drag Gambhir across his stumps but the left-hander is eager to stay leg-side of the ball and helps himself to a single when the bowler does stray onto his pads. Pujara survives the remainder of the over but he has looked vulnerable since his arrival at the crease.
Gambhir lazily hangs his bat outside off-stump but manages to not edge the ball to a waiting Prior. Finn gets one to come back at Gambhir and when the opener bravely leaves the ball, a few groans can be heard in the field.
Wicket! Pujara (8) run our (Bell)
Very poor from India. Gambhir is involved in another run out as he calls for a hopeful single following a nudge onto the leg-side. Pujara is always struggling when Bell hit the stumps and the replay confirms that he must head back to the dressing room. Tendulkar in next and he gets his usual standing ovation from the home supporters.
Well, what do we have here? Swann begins a new over and when the ball heads to slip, Trott claims a catch and wheels off in celebration. Gambhir doesn't move and the finger is not raised by Rod Tucker. However, the umpires meet for a discussion before asking for the third umpire to take a second look. The replay suggests that Trott has taken the catch but it's unclear whether there is an edge. Remember, there is no DRS so the umpire should only be asking if the ball carried, which it did. Gambhir does survive and England are left confused and disappointed. Maiden over.
Gambhir may well have not got an inside edge on that ball but the way the umpires came to the not out decision is the controversial. Anyway, we move on and it's Tendulkar's turn to face Finn.
The little master is off strike when he gets on top of the extra bounce to earn a single to point. Gambhir's luck continues as he edges one wide of slip to earn four runs to third man.
Wicket! Gambhir (40) c Prior b Finn
No replay needed this time! Gambhir drives once again outside off-stump but this time he can only edge the ball to Prior, who takes a smart diving catch. England back in charge in Kolkata. Virat Kohli in next for the hosts and he survives the over.
Gambhir should be having a word with himself back in the dressing room. It really was a lazy way to get out in a situation like this.
Swann continues but when he goes a bit full midway through the over, Tendulkar drops to one knee and sweeps the ball to fine leg for four runs.
Wicket! Tendulkar (5) c Trott b Swann
The crowd in Kolkata are completely silent as Tendulkar departs for five. Swann gets enough bounce to take the outside edge and this time Trott is able to fully celebrate a catch at slip. It's a big wicket and India are in big trouble.
Yuvraj Singh comes to the crease at a very difficult time and he is under real pressure to deliver now. The left-hander survives his first ball but England have the wicket they wanted from the over.
Kohli gets off the mark with a boundary past point but those shots will keep Finn interested. Dropped catch! Kohli punches the ball towards Bell, who is in close on the leg-side, but the ball is put down. It was a sharp chance but Bell did get two hands on the ball. A big lbw shout follows later in the over but after a long think, Mr Dharmasena decides that the ball was probably too high. It's all happening in Eden Gardens!
Swann will fancy his chances against Yuvraj but the left-hander is off the mark with an inside edge for four runs to fine leg. Good fielding from Compton to stop a drive at cover before Yuvraj decides against reaching for one outside off stump. Beautiful technique shown from Yuvraj as he nudges the ball through mid-on for four runs.
England enjoy a drinks break after a brilliant hour following the lunch break. Anderson is now back into the attack, replacing Finn.
England are looking dangerous every over now and Anderson is finding some reverse swing now. Kohli leaves the ball well outside off-stump but there is some movement. Maiden over.
Yuvraj is treating us to some textbook forward defensive shots as Swann continues his highly successful spell. There's just enough spin and bounce to keep Swann interested as Yuvraj pushes a single to cover to ruin a maiden over.
According to the laws of the game, the third umpire did make the correct decision to inform Rod Tucker that Gambhir did not edge the ball earlier in the session. Of course, it doesn't matter now but the umpires deserve credit as well as criticism.
Good work from Patel in the deep to limit Yuvraj to two runs following a whip through mid-wicket.
Wicket! Yuvraj (11) b Anderson
There has been a lot of talk about uneven bounce and poor old Yuvraj has been bowled by a delivery that kept very low. Anderson goes round the wicket to the left-hander and gets one to sneak under the bat and crash into the stumps. Captain Dhoni is in next and he has a big job on his hands.
Dhoni survives the Anderson over. What a performance from England since lunch, with five wickets falling for just 36 runs. India still trail by 85.
Swann continues to vary his length brilliantly and Kohli isn't allowed an inch of extra space at the crease. Maiden over.
Wicket! Dhoni (0) c Cook b Anderson
England are in dreamland now! Anderson fires one in just back of a good length and Dhoni can only edge the ball straight to Cook at first slip. Superb spell of fast bowling from Anderson and this one could be over sooner rather than later.
This is the fastest I've seen Anderson bowl for a while. Ashwin just manages to keep out the first ball with an inside edge and he almost drags onto the stumps later in the over with a false shot outside off stump. Superb over from Anderson, it's a wicket maiden.
England are refusing to release any pressure at the moment. Swann delivers six almost identical deliveries to complete another maiden over.
Ashwin just hasn't picked Anderson yet as he drags another ball just beyond his stumps to get off the mark with a single. Good work from Finn at mid-on to stop Kohli's nudge down the ground before the number four flicks one to mid-wicket for a single.
Risky game from Kohli to play across the line against Swann but he does earn a single to long-on. Swann then gets one to hold its line, deceiving Aswhin and beating the outside edge.
Anderson continues his spell and is keeping to a very good line outside off stump. Kohli can't pick the gaps in the field in the early part of the over but when Anderson eventually strays onto the pads, India's number four helps himself to four runs through mid-wicket.
England have fielded much better in this session and Compton does very well to block an Ashwin drive at cover. The same batsman takes a risk when he walks down the pitch but he manages to get enough on the ball to be safe. Maiden over from Swann.
Cook fancies a change and it's Panesar who comes into the attack with England in a brilliant position. Prior asks the question when Kohli raises his foot for a brief moment but the third umpire confirms there is no stumping. Good start from the Sussex spinner with just an Ashwin single coming from the over.
Swann continues and Kohli is immediately off strike with a nudge to long-on. Ashwin is not looking comfortable against the spin but survives the remaining five balls.
Panesar loses his length but Kohli can only find a single to cover and he looks disappointed. Great work from Pietersen at point to prevent Ashwin from keeping the strike at the end of the over.
Beautiful shot from Kohli as he shows us his quality with a drive to the cover boundary rope. Better from India as this pair sneak a single when Kohli nudges one onto the off-side before Ashwin finds a quick single to Panesar at square leg.
Slice of luck for Ashwin as he earns four runs with an edge that goes just wide of Trott at slip. Panesar responds well and forces Ashwin onto the back foot before making him reach for the ball in front of his pads.
Change of angle for Swann as he comes round the wicket to Kohli at the start of a new over. Kohli opens the face just enough to guide a single past Trott at slip before a push through cover brings Ashwin two runs.
Finn is back to begin what will be the final over before tea in Kolkata. It's very good from Finn and Kohli has no option but to defend all six balls outside off-stump.
Tea: What a session that has been for England. Six wickets fall in the space of a couple of hours and England are now on the verge of taking a 2-1 series lead. India will be bitterly disappointed with that collapse. Kohli and Ashwin are battling well but there isn't much batting to come for the hosts.
The dismissal of Sehwag immediately after lunch seemed to change the flow of the match. India enjoyed a brilliant first session but it looks like England could have this won by the end of the day. The hosts are still 62 runs behind.
Swann and Anderson in particular have been superb in that session. The pressure was building and as we all know, pressure brings wickets.
Kohli has looked good so far and Ashwin is certainly no amateur with the bat but the pitch is still doing enough that if England take one wicket, they will feel that the other three may come quickly.
Both sets of players are back out on the field and it will be Panesar who bowls the first over of the session.
Ashwin begins the session with a boundary by flicking the ball of his pads for four runs to square leg. Panesar does respond well and forces Ashwin to block four balls before seeing the ball race away to the third man boundary rope courtesy of a thick outside edge.
It's Finn who continues his spell from before the tea break. Kohli is off strike with a nudge to square leg and there's a single for Ashwin when he pushes the ball to mid-wicket.
Wicket! Kohli (20) c Prior b Finn
Big wicket for England. Finn gets one to shape away from Kohli and the out-of-form batsman can only edge the ball to Prior, who takes a routine catch. Zaheer is in next, England need 3 wickets for victory.
Finn and Prior are excited when the former gets one to come back at Zaheer. There is a noise but it's unclear whether it's a glove on first look. On replay, it looks as though the ball may have brushed his thigh. Good decision.
Panesar continues and it's a better start to the over. However, his good work is ruined when he delivers a high full toss to allow Ashwin to flick the ball through mid-wicket for four runs.
Clever bowling from Finn as he follows Zaheer when the tail-end batsman tries to make some room for himself at the crease.
Wicket! Zaheer (0) lbw b Finn
Even better from Finn as he goes very full to hit Zaheer's pads and Mr Dharamasena immediately raises the finger. The ball probably would have hit leg stump. Ishant Sharma is the new batsman.
Sharma is very twitchy at the crease and he looks happy to get off strike with a push to third man from his second ball. Ashwin flicks the ball to fine leg from the final ball of the over to keep the strike.
Missed stumping chance from Prior. Ashwin charges down the track but doesn't make contact, however, Prior is beaten by a deflection off the pad and can't whip the bails off in time. A single brings Sharma on strike and India's number 10 does well to block out the over.
Finn delivers a fierce bouncer at Ashwin, prompting a smile from Patel at mid-off. It's a very good over from Finn and the maiden means that Sharma will stay on strike.
Sharma is looking like a walking wicket but another missed chance from Prior means he survives. A shorter ball from Panesar finds the edge but England's wicketkeeper puts down the chance, leaving his teammate very disappointed. Sharma is living life dangerously as he leaves a delivery that almost kisses off stump at the end of the over.
Boundary for Ashwin as he gets on top of a Finn short ball to pull through the mid-wicket region. The next ball keeps very low but the ball is too wide to spell the end for Ashwin before the same batsman almost edges one towards the slips.
Anderson is back into the attack following his hugely successful spell before tea. Sharma responds well to the challenge and does well to defend the over.
Better from Prior as he reacts well to take two low deliveries down the leg-side from Finn. Big slice of luck for Ashwin when he drags one inches wide of his own stumps. Maiden over from Finn.
Anderson goes short to Sharma in the early part of a new over but the tail-end batsman can't be tempted into a false shot. A full in-swinging delivery follows but Sharma manages to work the ball to the point boundary for four runs. Very good shot from Sharma and he survives another over.
Brilliant from Ashwin as he punches the ball through mid-wicket for four runs, much to the frustration of Finn. Ashwin decides against taking a single from the fourth ball but he doesn't get another chance and Sharma will be on strike in the next over. India now trail by 33 runs.
Panesar is back for a new spell but Sharma is looking confident in defence. A cut shot flashes over the head of Anderson at second slip to bring four runs before he resorts back to his defensive roots for the remainder of the over.
Anderson comes back into the attack after a change of ends and Ashwin immediately takes two runs with a push to third man. India are gifted four byes when Anderson strays down leg-side to leave Prior with no chance behind the stumps. The deficit is only 23 now and it's time for a drinks break.
Swann is back for a new spell as England look for a breakthrough in their attempts to wrap up the match today. Sharma takes a risk by driving outside off-stump but he does survive and it's a maiden over.
Panesar replaces Anderson and he will be happy with Ashwin taking a single from the second ball to expose Sharma. More bad luck for Panesar when Sharma edges the ball short of Trott at slip.
Swann delivers a full toss but Ashwin can't take advantage and only collects two runs to deep mid-wicket. A sweep shot provides a chance for a single from the final ball and Ashwin keeps the strike.
Ashwin gets off strike at the start of a new Panesar over and the England spinner is so close to finding a wicket when Sharma plays and misses next ball. Two more singles follows and this Indian resistance continues.
Ashwin drives in the air at the start of Swann's over but there's no fielders close enough to take a catch on the off-side. Swann beats Sharma's outside edge with one that just holds its line but the giant of a tail-end batsman continues to defy England's attack.
Panesar continues but Ashwin defends well before turning the ball to square leg for a leisurely single. Sharma is getting the hang of this batting lark and blocks out the remainder of the over.
Good cricket from Sharma as he opens the face to get off strike at the start of Swann's over. Ashwin drives well through the off side but Patel does the fielding in the deep to restrict the all-rounder to a single.
Ashwin stretches for the ball outside off stump to cut Panesar for a single. Prior thinks he has Sharma stumped when the number ten stretches for the ball but the third umpire confirms that he made his ground, just.
Wicket! Sharma (10) b Panesar
Panesar finally ends this resilient partnership by sneaking a full delivery through Sharma's defence. England need one more wicket to win the match as Ojha comes to the crease. India trail by 10 runs.
Ojha is a genuine number 11 and we all know what they do. The little man launches the ball high into the sky but it lands safely on the leg-side and he collects two runs.
England may just have to bat again as Ashwin slog-sweeps for four runs at the start of Swann's new over. An edge trickles away for four runs bringing Ashwin a very well deserved half century and that means England must bat again. A reverse sweep results in a leg bye, bringing Ojha on strike. Ojha survives and India lead by one run.
We haven't seen a better shot than that today as Ashwin skips down the pitch to loft the ball over extra cover for four runs. A whip through mid-wicket brings four more and England have lost a bit of focus now.
Ashwin drops to one knee midway through the over to reverse sweep for a single, bringing Ojha on strike. Swann beats Ojha's outside edge with a beauty before the number 11 blocks the final two balls.
Panesar continues to toil away but the field is left too deep, allowing Ashwin to take a single from the fourth ball. An optimistic shout for lbw is quickly rejected with the ball turning too much.
Ashwin once again defends in the early part of the over before charging down the track and mistiming a big heave over mid-wicket, dot ball. A reverse sweep brings India two more runs but in truth, they should have got three. Cook leaves mid-on back and Ashwin takes a single to keep the strike.
Ashwin lofts the ball onto the leg-side and only collects a single, leaving Ojha to possibly face five balls. Nicely played from India's number 11 to guide the ball past slip for a single. Ashwin takes a couple of steps before launching the ball over long-on for four runs, which means Ojha will be on strike to Swann.
Swann has an optimistic shout for lbw rejected by Rod Tucker and despite living dangerously throughout the over, Ojha survives again.
The new ball is available and England have immediately taken it, with Anderson coming back into the attack.
Anderson does find some early shape with the new ball but Ashwin is equal to it. Good fielding from Patel stops a brilliant cover drive but there's no stopping the straight drive Ashwin hits for four towards the end of the over. Five runs are scored in the over.
Finn is back into the attack to share the new ball with Anderson and he immediately finds Ashwin's outside edge but the ball drops safely. Pietersen does well at third man to prevent the boundary and Ashwin doesn't take the single. Great shot from Ashwin as he moves into the eighties with a pull through mid-wicket for four runs. A single from the fifth ball means Ashwin then keeps the strike for the next over.
Anderson begins what is scheduled to be the final over of the day but they could claim an extra 30 minutes if they feel a victory is possible tonight. Ashwin once again shows his superb technique in defence before taking a single from the final ball of the over.
Close of play: That's it for the day in Kolkata. England will be disappointed that they couldn't wrap up this match today but the brilliant Ashwin means we are headed for a fifth day.
It's once again England's day and Cook will want his men to finish this match early tomorrow morning to take a surely inevitable 2-1 series lead.
Thanks for joining me for what has been a fascinating day of Test cricket and be sure to return to Sports Mole when this match reaches its climax tomorrow.
