Moeen Ali is hopeful that England's bowlers can make the most of the new ball tomorrow after taking just two New Zealand wickets on day two of the first Test at Lord's.

England all-rounder Moeen Ali is hopeful that the bowlers will improve on day three of the first Test against New Zealand with the new ball.

Ali took 1-52 on Friday as the Black Caps restricted the hosts' first-innings lead to just 89 runs.

New Zealand's top order impressed as they closed the day on 303 for the loss of just two wickets, with Kane Williamson unbeaten on 92 and Ross Taylor unscathed on 47.

"We are not far from the new ball so hopefully we can bowl a bit better," Ali told Sky Sports News. "I knew I would bowl later on.

"I was happy with the way I bowled today. I have been working on my action. I was forcing it in the West Indies. Every time I bowled wider there was more spin. Hopefully I can bowl it a bit fuller tomorrow."

Meanwhile, Yorkshire coach Jason Gillespie has confirmed that he has spoken to the ECB's director of cricket Andrew Strauss about England's head coach vacancy.
