Jos Buttler: 'England need to adapt'

Jos Buttler urges his England teammates to use this year's disappointing Cricket World Cup exit as a turning-point in their development.

Jos Buttler has admitted that England must learn lessons from the past ahead of their upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand.

The Black Caps finished runners-up at this year's Cricket World Cup, while it was a different matter entirely for England who claimed just two wins from their six outings.

Both the batting and bowling performance was heavily criticised in the wake of their tournament exit, and Buttler acknowledges that improvements simply have to be made.

"You have to be brutally honest and say we were getting it wrong," the Lancashire Lightning wicketkeeper is quoted as saying by Sky Sports News. "We almost had to play our perfect game to win. It's time to put the World Cup behind us. It was very disappointing but we learned some key messages.

"We have to be looking at scores of 350 and upwards. That's the way the game's going. In a few years we'll look back at the World Cup and say it was a turning-point in 50-over cricket.

"We have to go out there with freedom and have no fear of failure and play the brand of cricket that is so accustomed to 50-over cricket these days. The talent is there."

England were bowled out for 123 when the two sides met in the group stage of the World Cup, before New Zealand chased down that target in 12.2 overs.
