A century from captain Alastair Cook sees England open up a big advantage over New Zealand at lunch.

Captain Alastair Cook recorded his 25th century in an England shirt as the hosts stretched their lead over New Zealand on day four of the morning session between the two nations at Headingley.

Cook and England returned this morning on 116-1 and a lead of 296, while the skipper was just 12 runs short of his 100.

He eventually reached the milestone when he found the rope with a cover drive, but he was dismissed 30 runs later when his lofted shot was caught by Tim Southee off the bowling of spinner Kane Williamson.

Jonathan Trott, who started slowly during yesterday's evening session, had also picked up the pace and he went beyond his half-century just moments before Cook was sent back to the dressing room.

His departure brought Ian Bell to the crease and he got off the mark with a reverse sweep for four. However, he lasted just two more runs as his slog-sweep was caught by Martin Guptill, again from Williamson's bowling.

That brought Yorkshire's Joe Root to the crease and he was unbeaten on 20 alongside Trott (76) when lunch was called with the home side 249-3, which is an advantage of 429.
