James Anderson leads the England fight back on day two of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

England have fought back with the ball on day two of the first Test against New Zealand at Lord's.

The hosts struggled at the crease and were bowled out for a modest score of 232 before the visitors ended the day on 153-4 as Jimmy Anderson became only the fourth Englishman to take 300 Test wickets.

England began the day on 160-4 and made slow progress before a dramatic middle-order collapse in the first session.

Joe Root (40) was dismissed by Tim Southee before Matt Prior fell victim to the New Zealand bowler lbw for a golden duck with the very next ball.

Southee failed to get his hat-trick, but Neil Wagner was among the wickets in the next over as Stuart Broad went without making any runs.

Wagner then took out Graeme Swann (5) soon after as the home side laboured to 201-8 at lunch.

Steven Finn (4) was bowled lbw by Southee after the interval before Jonny Bairstow (41) was Southee's fourth wicket of the day for the loss of 58 runs as England were all out for 232.

England then started strongly with the ball, with Jimmy Anderson seeing off Hamish Rutherford (4) in the first over.

Anderson had a moment to savour minutes later as the dismissal of Peter Fulton (2) saw the Englishman claim his 300th Test wicket as New Zealand struggled to 7-2.

Ross Taylor brought up his 50 after tea before Anderson made it 301 Test wickets when he took out the batsman for 66.

The final wicket of the day came when Dean Brownlie (23) went lbw to Finn as New Zealand finished 79 runs behind on 153-4 when bad light stopped play.
