England took two more wickets during the afternoon session of day one of the second Test with India to restrict their hosts to 167-5.
India resumed after lunch on 87-3 and Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli soon brought up their 50 partnership as they reached 110-3.
However, they could only add a further eight runs as Monty Panesar struck for a third time after Kohli drove the ball straight to Nick Compton at cover.
The early balance of the game was shifting with every wicket and England were firmly on top when Graeme Swann bowled Yuvraj Singh for a second-ball duck to reduce India to 119-5.
That wicket saw the introduction of India captain MS Dhoni as he quickly looked to restore some calm to the crease.
Dhoni was initially passive while he got himself acquainted with Swann's variety of deliveries before he slowly upped the tempo to score 27 to take India to tea at 167-5, with Pujara remaining comfortable on 72.
