England set Australia target of 270

England have set Australia a target of 270 runs in their ICC Champions Trophy opener at Edgbaston.

Ian Bell top scored with a knock of 91, while Ravi Bopara made an unbeaten 46 at the end of the innings as the hosts finished on 269-6.

England got off to a blistering start as Alastair Cook and Bell scored freely out in the middle.

The pair made 57 runs between them before Cook (30) was caught behind by Matthew Wade off the bowling of Shane Watson.

Despite the loss of their captain, the runs continued flowing for England and Bell soon had a half-century to his name.

However, a collapse started when Trott (43) was dismissed by Mitchell Starc before Bell went for 91 to James Faulkner to leave the home side on 189-3.

Joe Root (12) and Eoin Morgan (8) both fell victim to Clint McKay, while Jos Buttler made just a single run when he was bowled by Faulkner.

A late flourish from Bopara (46) and Tim Bresnan (19) then pushed England along to close on 269-6.
