Ashley Giles admits that the decision to leave Adil Rashid out of the squad for the first two Test matches against the West Indies has surprised him.

Former England coach Ashley Giles has admitted that he expected to see Adil Rashid play in at least one of the first two Test matches against the West Indies.

James Tredwell was preferred to the Yorkshire all-rounder in the opening match before Moeen Ali returned to the squad to take on the role of frontline spinner, and Giles believes that England are making a mistake by not giving a chance to Rashid.

"You've got to see him play and I'm a little surprised he hasn't played this match," he told reporters. "Maybe they will use him in the last Test because going into the summer against the Kiwis and Australia, it's going to be difficult to play him then.

"I think England would like to play him in the West Indies but they've got a lot on their minds as well.

"They've got to win Test matches and the side is under pressure. You would like to see him play but you don't just give matches away."

An unbeaten century from Joe Root helped England take control on day three of the second Test in Grenada on Thursday.
