Nasser Hussain: 'Alastair Cook could not continue as captain'

Nasser Hussain feels that Alastair Cook could not continue in his role as England one-day captain due to the team's and his struggles in 2014.

Nasser Hussain believes that the England and Wales Cricket Board made the correct decision to remove Alastair Cook as captain in one-day internationals.

The 29-year-old was relieved of his duties following the Three Lions' 5-2 series defeat to Sri Lanka, while Cook averaged just 27.52 runs in his last 20 one-day games.

The batsman has been replaced by Eoin Morgan, who will lead England into the World Cup, and Hussain is adamant that he needs to fire in order for his side to have success in the tournament.

"What you can't survive as captain is scoring no runs when the team are losing and that's what's been happening for Alastair in one-day cricket," Hussain told Sky Sports News.

"The only way England are going to do well in this World Cup is if their star, their gun one-day player Eoin Morgan, finds some form.

"Morgan, with the captain's armband on, has shown signs of the player that he was and still can be. If it is Morgan – it could be Joe Root – I think it is the right decision because England need him to fire."

England are next in one-day international action against Australia in January.
