Simon Kerrigan 'will prove himself Test worthy'

Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan insists that he can still be a success for England at Test level, despite struggling on his five-day debut against Australia this summer.

Lancashire spinner Simon Kerrigan is confident that he can put his disastrous England debut behind him and go on to become a success at Test level.

The 24-year-old was brought into the side for the final Ashes Test at The Oval, but was taken for 53 off his eight first-innings overs and was an unused bowler when Australia took to the crease for a second time.

This performance may deter England from picking Kerrigan as their slow-bowling option for the reverse series this winter, but the slow-left armer feels that he has the drive to respond from the experience, which he also believes could benefit him in the long term.

"I was feeling sorry for myself for a couple of days, but getting back into things straight away with Lancashire helped," he told BBC Radio Lancashire.

"[England team director] Andy Flower took me to one side [at The Oval] and said 'you are far better off having the experience you've had now rather than getting a go in four or five years, and it would be an even greater story if you bounced back from it and had a prospering Test career'.

"As long as I keep an energy about myself, wanting to get better - an experience like that drives you on to get better, get back into the side and, if you get another chance, prove what you can do."

Kerrigan has been in excellent first-class form for Lancashire this season, taking 54 wickets at an average of 20.30 in the Old Trafford outfit's quest for promotion from County Championship Division Two.
