Magnificent Joe Root hits another century as England dominate day one

Captain Joe Root hits yet another century as England reach 244-3 at stumps on day one of the second Test against West Indies.

Captain Joe Root has recorded his 25th Test century, guiding England to 244-3 at stumps on day one of the second Test against West Indies.

After winning the toss in Bridgetown, Root was required to make an early entrance to the crease after Zak Crawley was dismissed for a seven-ball duck.

However, Root led from the front to assist fellow opener Alex Lees, who lacked rhythm in hitting 30 from 137 balls before departing the ball after Root had brought up his fifty.

At this point, England had scored just 80 runs from 45 overs, but that soon changed when Dan Lawrence joined Root, who was seemingly given the licence to attack with freedom.

Root also kept things ticking over at the other end, following his ton in the first Test by ending the day with 119 off 246 balls, hitting 12 boundaries in the process.

After 13 fours and one six had brought up 91, Lawrence appeared well set to join Root in reaching three figures, but he holed out to Kraigg Brathwaite off the bowling of Jason Holder from the penultimate ball of the day.

While that represented a disappointing end to a one-sided day, all of the momentum is with England ahead of trying to seize total control of the game on Thursday. body check tags ::
