England have missed out on a place in the T20 World Cup final after suffering a five-wicket defeat to New Zealand in Abu Dhabi.

Despite setting a target of 167, Eoin Morgan's men were beaten with six balls to spare, a superb unbeaten 73 from Daryl Mitchell proving to be the difference.

With Jonny Bairstow moving up the order to replace injured opener Jason Roy, 37 runs came from the first-wicket partnership before Bairstow was out for 13.

Jos Buttler soon followed after contributing 29 from 24 balls, and it allowed Dawid Malan (41) and Moeen Ali to take centre stage in helping England set a strong target.

Moeen Ali's unbeaten 51 came from 37 balls, the all-rounder recording three fours and two sixes, and a lively 17 from Liam Livingstone took England to 166-4 off their 20 overs.

England's struck twice during the early stages of New Zealand's reply, Chris Woakes removing both Martin Guptill (4) and Kane Williamson (5).

However, Mitchell and Devon Conway put on 82 for the third wicket, keeping the Black Caps in contention before the latter was out for 46.

Liam Livingstone struck for a second time, leaving New Zealand requiring over 14 runs per over, but a disastrous 17th over from Chris Jordan left New Zealand needing 35 off the final three overs.

The introduction of James Neesham proved crucial, the middle-order batsman hitting 27 off just 11 balls, but Mitchell had kept the innings together with a 43-ball half-century.

With the final ball of his spell, Adil Rashid struck to end the Neesham demolition job, but it was not enough to discourage Mitchell as he hit two sixes and a four off the bowling of Woakes to get his team over the line with six balls to spare. body check tags ::
