Joe Root has insisted that England are "hungry" to win their Test series against Sri Lanka after the first match ended in a draw.
The hosts declared ahead of the start of play on day five, but were unable to dismiss their opponents before the end of the evening session.
The batsman told BBC Test Match Special: "It fills me with a lot of confidence. To set the game up is what you need to do and we did that. When you've got 500 on the board it gives you a good chance even on a flat wicket like that.
"The guys were outstanding throughout the day. Our energy levels backed the bowlers up and their skill levels were outstanding. It makes us hungry to go on and win the series now.
"I thought when we got Kulasekara (the seventh wicket to fall) we had a really good chance but that finish is why Test cricket is still such a good game."
The sides play again at Headingley from Friday.
