Joe Root happy to take on "a bit more responsibility"

Joe Root says that he is happy to move back up the England batting order to number three now that he is "comfortable" in his role as Test skipper.

England Test captain Joe Root has insisted that he is ready to "take on a bit more responsibility" after more than a year in the role.

The 27-year-old, who replaced Alastair Cook as skipper in February 2017, has moved up the batting order to number three for the meeting with Pakistan.

Root is happy to step up as part of the revamped setup, seeing it as an opportunity to further prove himself now that he is "comfortable" in his leadership position.

"It's an opportunity for me to take on a bit more responsibility," he told reporters. "I've had a year in the captaincy now and I feel I've gained enough experience to feel comfortable doing that.

"For me it was getting used to the captaincy and making sure I could separate the two; that my full focus was on my batting when it came around. Ultimately nothing will change the way I go about my batting. I will look to have that hunger and desire to make really big runs."

Root has batted at number three on 17 previous occasions in Test cricket, but dropped to four when taking over the captaincy from Cook.
