South Africa's lower order frustrate England on day one of the third Test at Lord's.

South Africa's lower order have dug in to avoid a disastrous opening day to the third Test against England at Lord's.

The tourists, who could go to the top of the world rankings if they avoid defeat, ended the day on 262-7 having been 105-5 just hours earlier.

Steve Finn tore into the tourists' top order as Alviro Petersen (22), Hashim Amla (13) and Jacques Kallis (3) all fell to the bowler.

Those wickets came after captain Graeme Smith was dismissed by Jimmy Anderson for 14.

Following another wicket for Anderson - this time AB de Villers for 27 - Jacques Rudolph and JP Duminy put up some resistance for the visitors.

However, Graeme Swann got his first wicket of the day when he bowled Rudolph for 42, while Duminy fell to Anderson having made 61.

The South Africans' lower order continued to frustrate the hosts and they ended the day with Vernon Philander (46) and Dale Steyn (19) at the crease.
