Steven Finn has admitted that England endured a "tricky day" in Cape Town after the visitors just claimed one South African wicket to leave the second Test wide open.

A record-breaking innings on Sunday, led by the partnership of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow, saw Alastair Cook declare on 629-6.

The Proteas began day three today on 141-2, but slow play - at one point during the morning session, just two runs were scored in the space of six overs - saw them advance by just 212, albeit with the loss of a single wicket, by stumps.

"[It was] a tricky day for us," said Finn, who claimed the wicket of AB de Villiers before tea. "One wicket in a day isn't ideal or what we wanted coming into the day but we stuck to our guns very well, created a couple of chances.

"We changed our fields, our pace, our lengths suitably for the wicket, trying to make something happen. There were half-chances and little inclinations for us to take wickets. We're still a long way ahead of the game and we haven't let South Africa get ahead of us."

South Africa will begin day four chasing a target of 276.
