Ben Stokes has called on England one-day captain Alastair Cook to give him a central role in the 50-over team, particularly with the ball.

The 22-year-old Durham all-rounder is considered the single success story of England's tour Down Under and played a crucial part in securing their only win over Australia this winter at Perth on Friday.

He scored 70 batting at number three and then took four wickets to earn Cook's side a 57-run victory at The WACA.

"I think [captain Alastair Cook] knows. We chatted about it and I said, 'Yeah, I want to bowl at the end'," he told reporters. "I've done that role for Durham. It's not like I'm not used to it."

"It can go one way or the other. I always want to be involved in [the key moments]. I want to try and influence the result for whatever team I'm playing for."

Stokes, 22, has only played 14 ODIs in his England career since debuting against Ireland in 2011.
