Chris Woakes believes that he can thrive as an all-rounder for England at the World Cup.

Chris Woakes has revealed that he is desperate to be recognised as an all-rounder for England ahead of the World Cup.

The Warwickshire seamer took 17 wickets in the series defeat to Sri Lanka to secure his place in the squad for the tournament, but he faces competition for a spot in the side due to the return of experienced opening bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad.

However, Woakes believes that he can take on more responsibility as an all-rounder heading into the tri-series with Australia and India.

"First and foremost it's great to have them back, as a unit it lifts everyone. They're world-class bowlers with a lot of experience behind them and it particularly helps the younger guys to learn from them," the 25-year-old told reporters.

"We'll see what happens, but hopefully I can still feature and play a huge part. Obviously if I'm offered the new ball again I'm going to take it but if the experienced lads are going to do that then I'm happy to fit in anywhere.

"Hopefully I can fit in the team as an all-rounder. I feel I can offer a lot with the bat as well as the ball."

Woakes is likely to be competing with Steven Finn and Chris Jordan for the final bowler's spot when the tournament gets underway in February.
