England take four wickets on day one of the first Test against India as the hosts rack up 323 runs following a tough opener for the visitors.

India have taken control of the first Test in Ahmedabad by closing the day on 323-4 following a tough morning for England.

Virender Sehwag was the standout player for the home side after claiming 117 runs, which was his first three-figure score in almost two years.

Sehwag and his partner Gautam Gambhir were dominant at the crease in the morning session and managed to reach 120 for no wickets by lunch, which left England with plenty of work to do in the afternoon session.

Sehwag reached his 23rd Test century by snatching a four over mid wicket but England bowler Graeme Swann began the revival for the visitors by bowling out Gambhir and later ending Sehwag's run, which was then swiftly followed by the dismissal of Sachin Tendulkar, who could only put 13 runs on the board.

England were able to slow the run rate down after tea but their threat began to dwindle due to a positive partnership between Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. It was Swann once again who managed to claim a wicket by taking out Kohli for 19.

India have the upper hand at the close of play with Yuvraj Singh and Pujara, who is unbeaten on 98, at the crease.
