England suffer a dramatic 100-run defeat to Sri Lanka on the final day of the second Test at Headingley.

England have suffered a dramatic 100-run defeat to Sri Lanka on the final day of the second Test at Headingley.

The hosts were two balls away from earning a draw, but the dismissal of James Anderson saw the tourists claim a 1-0 win in the two-Test series.

Starting the day on a precarious score of 57-5 and needing 350 to win, England reached 173-7 at tea following the dismissals of Joe Root (31) and Matt Prior (10).

However, Moeen Ali managed to hit his maiden Test half-century during the second session to keep the home side alive at the crease.

Chris Jordan (21) and Stuart Broad (0) were next to go when they both fell victim to Rangana Herath before Anderson arrived out in the middle to partner Ali with around 20 overs left to play.

Ali eventually got to a century as he and Anderson dug in to frustrate the Sri Lankans.

Some heroic defending from Anderson looked to have salvaged England an incredible draw, but he was caught with just two balls remaining as Sri Lanka bowled their opponents out for 249.
